Having just bought this model to upgrade from my MYO XP I could immediately see the advantage.
firstly let me state for the record, the MYO XP positively excels, I love it, there are no drawbacks to it & i'll continue to use it alongside this.

I do use numerous petzls & have NO affiliation with the company, I simply find a good brand & tend to stick with it! ..check out my other petzl headtorch reviews if required.

Ok some folks have stated it's heavy, not really by comparison to similar headtorches, Run time with 3 AA's (I tend to use rechargeables unless out in the extremes) is great, never worried, never been caught short for light if used properly, you don't need it on brightest mode all the time so click through to acceptable levels to eke out battery management & get into the habit!

Which brings me to the reason I now have both models, I actually find that the original LED Myo XP can be too bright, & ever aware of battery conservation (why waste energy)? ..the easily programmable light "steps" offered by the RXP make for a great facility.

To change light settings (ALL settings including strobe / s.o.s. levels) you simply press both the on/off button at the same time as boost & hold them down, till the light flashes then change (& count your settings as you press additionally, it will cycle through constantly till you decide! ..takes a bit of practise, but that's the same with any new item?

from this point you can choose & store 3 settings to dial into requirements for whatever activity / purpose you currently are doing.

THE LIGHT WILL ACKNOWLEDGE THE STORING OF THE SETTING (flashing), TURN IT OFF & REPEAT IF OTHER SETTINGS ARE ALSO REQUIRED.

Standard (straight out of the pack) are...10 (brightest), 6, then 4.
It's not rocket science, you will only need to familiarise yourself once or twice, (so don't worry about losing the instructions)

I like to keep mine on a low (1 or 2) with 6 & 8 generally, this way it typically does what I want without any battery angst.

Some folk worry about use in the cold, well I've always used mine on misty nights, in storms etc & very low alpine environments (as well as diy) & if temperature is a concern, get a wooly hat, & wrap part of the excess over the battery compartment to assist keeping it warm, batteries produce heat to a degree when working so you'll be adding a thermal layer without adding bulk, i've used mine in -25 through -40 without problem, if cold i'll be wearing a wooly hat anyway, ..so no problem.

I tend to use rechargeables on my old MYO xp which is unregulated so there is light output decay as the 1.2 volt batteries lose charge, however ythey do very well.
The difference here is with the regulated system it maintains a constant light till it cannot draw adequately, then flashes you a reminder to either downgrade light levels (& it'll recalculate power times) or change batteries ..soon!

Some less thoughtful folk berate the fact that the charge indicator is on the top & not visible when being worn, well you realy only need to know what charge is when you turn it on to get some idea don't you? ..failing that take it off & check occasionally, or get a friend to tell you, it's a 3 stage colour "traffic light" led so foolproof.

Just checked, it also shrinks down onto my 7yr old daughters head without movement, (no additional strap hanger) ..so much so that she's got her eyes on it for night hikes already! ..you wish kiddo!

Therefore if this is a gift to dad , but for all to use, the program light setting is ideal for general family use, D of E, plumbers, electricians, runners walkers , emergency kit, blackouts etc.
Changing settings with gloves isn't particularly easy, but can be done, it's a knack dependant upon how thick & sausage like your fingers become in gloves / mitts.

The mouldings on both models are the same, the diffusors (flood beam) are the same & very effective & durable) despite dropping mine countless times show no harm, the sit very well within the body & flip as required without faffing.

Great kit, worthy investment, work out what you want to use it for, once purchased you will use it alot I assure you. it's tough, but I would recommend using a cheap neoprene camera case (fit it don't guess) for additional protection & storage.

MY only gripe is that Petzl don't mak a dedicated foam "poche" pouch as they do fro the tikka's / zipka's etc, because I would like to keep this on my karabiner with keys etc.

So if you need more variable light this is for you, otherwise the regular xp will do you proud, I like to know that if i'm awake outside & wanting to read all night I can stick this as low as 8 lumens without seriously affecting my overall battery life for the next few nights of a trip.

great product, very bright and great for night running, even off road, although only on tracks and trails you already know. battery pack on the back felt a little heavy at first, but soon got used to that. Battery life is excellent as well, and can be greatly improved by using the light on setting 8 as the highest ( virtually indistinguishable output from setting 10, but vastly improved battery life) Would reccomend this to anyone who runs in very dark ( country lanes etc) conditions or off road. If just using as extra light in a streetlit environment, less powerful, lighter versions would be advisable.

Good versatile headtorch, 16 April 2010

Not to be confused with the older version that doesn't have a white head. Bought this for various outdoor qualifications, used it on an assessment a couple of weeks ago. The light performed very well, lighting up to about 70-100 metres depending on how dark it is (the darker, the better the performance) with a white coloured light. It tilts over a good range and the diffuser is good for close flood light, while the normal has the excellent throw distance. I especially like the ability to program the light output yourself, which I found easy to do (see youtube for demo's). I programmed my light so the lowest setting comes on first, this way when I just want to check my map without completely destroying my night vision, I can. Its regulated (light doesn't dim significantly until nearly the end of the battery life, unlike normal torches which dim immediately, continually, until unusable), but not on the highest two settings, so I have set my maximum to the brightest regulated level (level 8 out of 10). I find the boost button useful for a quick high blast to look around when the torch is off, or while checking the map on low.

It runs on regular alkaline, lithium and rechargeable batteries. Lithium are great, much more powerful than alkaline, a lot lighter and work much better in cold conditions. Rechargeable's being great for cost savings, though it should be noted they don't last as long so its worth taking backups/2nd set with these. The headtorch also comes with an over the top headband which doesn't seem to be in much of the literature. You have to clip this on yourself if you want to use it. It is a bit pricey, but then after all the money I spend on fuel just to get to the hills and other kit, its not a lot extra to make the job easier and safer. If you don't do a lot of night navigation or need the ability to light up long distances, this headtorch is overkill, if your after a tent torch for reading before you go to sleep, buy a Petzl Tikka.

If your ordering, watch for delivery and dispatch confusion! I bought mine after reading dispatched within 4-5 days, delivery is the next 4-5 days after this. On realising this, I e-mailed the seller to cancel my order as it wasn't going to arrive in time. They rang me, said they had it in stock and could get it to me next day delivery, which they did at no extra cost. Thanks Foot-Steps.

A good tip if your light is getting reflected a lot back in your face because of the weather, hold the torch at wait level or lower it makes it easier to see.

Replacement Globe, 14 Aug 2010

I received this item intact, but when I opened it to use it a couple of weeks later the glass globe was broken. The only replacement I could find was a Medium Campingaz Globe, but I couldn't get it to fit. After wasting money on a Small Campingaz Globe I took the lantern to Millets where they tried a standard Campingaz Medium Globe, but this broke while he attempted to fit it. The globe for this lantern appears to be non-standard and will be very difficult to replace if it is broken. I now have a useless lantern that I cannot use. Don't buy this lantern unless you think you will never break the globe!

I am well happy with this item. It's so easy to use, connecting the gas cartridge is just a push and twist, the best part being that it takes cv plus cartridges which means during the day i can pug the same cartridge into my campingaz party stove. And with the piezo it does light with just one click (as long as you remember to turn the gas on, silly me). Also comes with a nice well fitting bag which has a solid plastic guard.

I know there's a very similar camping gas lamp, all i could see that was different was the plate on the top over the globe is bigger and in this country with the wether i thought it would be better to keep the rain out and the bag i talked about.

But i really think this lamp is awesome and pleased i brought it. So, go on, buy this one, it's great

After getting frustrated with weak battery powered lanterns I went for this gas lantern and was pleased I did. It's easy to set up and use with just a push and click onto the self-sealing cartidges. When packing away at the end of a trip, just remove it from the cartridge and pop it back in its own plastic container - no risk of the glass globe getting damaged.

Just make sure you carry spare mantles, I forgot and had to go back to torches when I didn't have a spare mantle - doh!

My parents had 12v 35w halogen ceiling spot lights in the upstairs bathroom which got hot and have been causing condensation problems in the loft in the winter. Because of the heat they gave off they could not have loft insulation placed on top of them which would have cured the condensation problems.

Answer - I purchased these 12v 4w replacement LED lights. They ran off the existing 240v/12v transformers with no problems. They do not get hot so we have now placed insulation over them in the loft which should cure the condensation problems this winter. They only consume 4w each so they will be using just over a 10th of the electricity the 35w halogen lamps used saving on their electricity bill.

They appear brighter then the old 12v 35w halogen ones and my parents are very pleased with them and the colour of the light they give off. My brother has bought LED lights in the past and said these are definitely brighter. Before purchasing these I did do some searches online regarding LED light bulb wattages and customers views on various designs and these seemed the best value for money / quality. Obviously time will tell how reliable they are.

So overall I am very pleased with the purchase of these LED light bulbs and would purchase them again.

Perhaps I have been spoilt as previously I had purchased some exergi bulbs at almost twice the price last year. I must admit to have been very much influenced by the other reviewers for this item and am delighted that they were very happy with the product. Sadly I felt that the bulbs fell short of their claimed luminescence and therefore returned them for an extremely prompt refund. For the record may I add that I feel that these bulbs are a good product and obviously more than satisfactory for the majority of people, however in our case they simply provided insufficient light and we will be pursuing 6w bulbs in the future.

We would have liked more detail. It implied it was for wall or window fixing but did not have the wall mounting stuff, its a separate item evidently. We did get round it but it caused a problem. Fan itself is fine.
